The operating system gives a way to control the execution of programs and gives a set of standard routines that programs can use. When you start more than one program at a time the operating system keeps track so the programs don't try to use the same area of memory. When you write a program you don't want to reinvent how to display something or read and write a file. There are modules built into an operating system to do that.

if you want to know how computers work with operating system, it basically tells the hardware, especially the processor, how to work, and it brings it all in an easy user interface.

You don't have to have a OS or even a HDD installed to get on the internet or play music. I have a computer in my shop that does not have a OS or even a HDD to install a OS on and I mainly use it to get on the internet and surf for drivers and the like....I am using a KNOPPIX CD and the OS runs of the CD itself...So you dont really have to have a OS....Thanks
