I usually put the water from the tap in plastic milk jugs(after I have cleaned the jugs real good). The reason I store this water is for my aquariumns for my fish. Then store the others for home use.

If the containters were clean to begin with, non deteriorating(like glass milk jugs) and you use chlorinated tap water(not out of a pond) then, several years if closed with a non deteriorating cap.

Do you mean until the water become polluted or rotten? It shouldn't as long as the jugs of water are sealed tightly and the jugs are "food grade" (this just means the bottles won't start seeping chemicals after a certain time period).

Are they plastic jugs? No longer than six months. The chemicals in the plastic begin to leech.

I have Mormon neighbors. What they do is use their bleach bottles. When the bleach is gone there is the exact amount of bleach left to keep the water fresh for one year. Then, they throw those out, and replace with new gallons of empty bleach bottles, filled with water. All are marked with the expiration date..
