he formulated the okazaki fragment theroy that describes the way lagging strand DNA is synthesized from the 5'-->3' direction instead of the previously though 3'-->5 direction.

In 1968, Reiji Okazaki determined that DNA synthesis was not a smooth, continuous process. Rather, fragments of DNA were synthesized discretely, and assembled later on. They are joined together by phosphodiester bonds which is done by DNA ligase.
