You can ask, but they probably won't. My doctor went on vacation last week (I just turned 39 weeks today) and I practically begged and they said they wouldn't do it till they got back, so I have to wait till Monday. Don't you just love doctors who decide to go on vacation this late into one of their patients pregnancy? I really think they should have to plan their vacations 10 months in advance (or at least 6 months) so that you know about it and can become familiar with a different doctor! Yes, I know there are those of you going "So you don't think they are entitled to a vacation?" And to that I say sure, but didn't choose their profession, THEY did, planning way ahead should just go with the territory (in regards to their vacation time).
And to tell you honestly, I don't know what these other people are talking about, yes labor hurts when you are induced, but labor ALWAYS hurts. I've been induced 3 times and as I stated before I'm being induced Monday. It's no biggy. And the thing that causes these "complications" everyone is so keen on scaring you with is not the induction, its the epidural. (Which I've never had). The epidural causes all sorts of horrible problems, the biggest one being that you cannot feel to push and your pushing is not as effective as it should be, causing the need for a c section. I truly hope you research epidurals thoroughly before getting one.

I had to have my first daughter induced because of toxemia. It wasn't my first choice of things to happen but things could have been worst. Sometimes your regular ob may not actually be the one to deliver. Having a baby is a thing of nature. I know it may be uncomfortable for someone else to deliver but just know that all of the doctors are trained in their profession and your doctor wouldn't just leave his patients to anyone. Just discuss your concerns with your doctor and see what he has to say.

I wouldn't There are plenty of reasons to let nature take it's course. What are the chances that your O.B will be the one to deliver her anyway? I don't know about your hospital, but at mine there was only a 30% chance I'd have my midwife there anyway.
I would be more uncomfortable with inducing. Just my opinion.

You need to understand that just because your O.B. is going on vacation that does not mean no one else can't deliver your baby. You should be thinking of your childs well-being instead of thinking so irrationally. Don't induce, that causes all sorts of problems. My foolish sister-in-law induced my first nephew because her O.B. didn't want his Christmas vacation interrupted. I would have told him to fly a kite! Be smart, just let the baby come when it is ready. Babies are delivered everyday, some on freeways, in bathrooms, etc.

At 38 weeks you may be full term but your not "full term" Id just wait and see what happens. I doubt youll go into labor before the 40th week if youve gone this far and if you do, your ob will either be back or youll have another person do it, which isnt really that bad.

If you are uncomfortable with his absence, then I would talk with him about possibly inducing labor. At the very least, he should tell you what his plans are for a substitute, should you go into labor in his absence.

I have been induced 4 times only because I have high risk pregnancies and it is better to get the baby out early.
You can ask him, but don't be disappointed if he says no.....he is considering what is best for your baby.

Induction carries plenty of risks. It gives you a higher risk of a c-section, for one.
So, ask yourself if you're so comfortable with this OB that you want him to be your surgeon. Ask if you think highly of a doctor who'd go ahead with an intervention for the sake of convenience. Etc.
