I am getting married in July. I am marrying a soldier that is coming home for leave for two weeks so we can get married. We only have a two week window to get all the military paperwork filled out as well. how long does it take to change my name everywhere that it needs to be changed so we can take all of the official paprwork to the right army people? I know my drivers license wont take long, and I just need the marriage certificate. But what about SSN# and passport, important stuff like that. Thanks for the help!!

You can get it all the same day if your willing to run your butt off. lol. You will get a copy of the marriag certificate when you get married, then take that to the social security office. There, you will apply for a new card (they can give you a reciept, but you have to ask for it - which will work for the army-for now) you will have the same #, take that and change you license, then go to where you get your passport, and apply for a changed passport (although I don't know how long this takes I'm sure they can give you a recipt).

1. Track down the location of your local social security office and find out their hours BEFORE you get married. Take your driver's license with your maiden name on it, your current ssn, and your marriage certificate, and plan to be at the office on the day after the wedding. GET THERE EARLY so you can get immediate attention and not wait forever. They can help you with the ssn issue. You won't get the card right away, but they can assist you with the paperwork and maybe even have something to give to the Army.

2. Go to your fiance's army post after you are married with ALL of your paperwork (drivers' license, ssn, marriage certificate, etc.) and ask to see the post's family assistance office. They should be able to provide you with someone who can help you work your way through the ropes regarding your passport, getting you registered with the PX, health insurance, etc.

I will defer to the Army wife above about the second issue, but the ssn information is still correct.

You can't change YOUR last name until you get married After you are married you will need to change your last name on you driver's license, SSN as well as Passport. if you work you will have to change that. This all comes AFTER you have gotten married. It takes anywhere from a few days to a few weeks for it to all change. Although you can use your married last name right from the start.

You should get your marriage certificate a couple of days before your wedding or at least file for it then on the day of your wedding it will be signed by everyone and that is when you will start getting your name changed. Just make sure to have that with you when you go to get paper work filled out.

You dont have to wait until you get it changed, you will need to take your birth certf. ss card and marriage license to dears first they will then add you as a dependent under your husband. then from there you will need to go to tricare, that will add you to his insurance. that takes 30 days to get insurance tho. You will also go to the social security office with the papers from above to change your last name good luck

Another good idea is to retain your surname and just add on your husbands surname to yours, that way you you keep your identity, independence and individuality. Just a thought, many women are proud keepers of their maiden name.
