I keep seeing people asking about cookies, as I am new to pc`s please can someone tell me if I need cookies and if not how do I get rid of them. many thanks.

There no more different then temporary Internet files. A cookie is basically what keeps track of what website you have visited and it also remember all your user name and password so you don't log in all the time.
I usually clean mine out a least one month or every two months.

They're created by web sites that you visit and can make things a little easier next time you visit but there's no need to keep them.
There are lots of ways to get rid of them: e.g. if you're using Internet Explorer 7 click Tools and then click Delete Browsing History and you get an option to delete them.

Some legitimate sites use cookies and won't work properly without them, but some unscrupulous sites use cookies in undesireable ways. I set my browser to always prompt me whether to allow cookies. If it's a site I trust, I respond to always allow them; if it's some kind of adserver or stats counter I block them; if I'm not sure I usually block them, and if it turns out the site won't work without them I can unblock them.

cookies need to enabled for alot of sites to function properly, although you do not need to keep cookies on your system after you are done visiting the site
