Most likely, there is a leak somewhere in the AC system and all the refrigerant has leaked out. In most states car parts stores sell the refrigerants you need (they should be able to tell you which one or ones will work in your car), but the best thing to do is to have the AC system tested first, and the leak found and fixed. Otherwise, it could be a problem with the electrical part of the AC system just not turning it on, but a leak is a much more common cause. Good luck!

Additional comment: Some cars have a sensor and will automatically shut off the AC if it detects that there is no refrigerant, so turning the AC on and then looking under the hood to see if the compressor is working will work on some cars but not all. AC is one of the things where unless you are certified and know exactly what you are doing it is simpler to take the car to a qualified shop and have them do it. AC is one of the few things on my car I won't fix myself.

Without knowing anything else about your car, possibly the compressor is not running for various reasons, or the system could be low or out of refrigerant.

Try this: Crank your car and turn the a/c on max. Open your hood and find the a/c compressor (it's driven off the serpentine or v-belt). Look and listen to see if you hear/see it clicking on and off every few seconds. If so, then the system is out of refrigerant. If it's out of refrigerant then there is a leak somewhere in the system and you need to have it inspected at a qualified repair shop. If the compressor is not running at all, it could be numerous problems including an electrical glitch, fuse, bad a/c switch, or a compressor clutch which needs replacing.

Hope this helps.
