Well...i dunno about England, but Dell computer (desktop and laptops) are good quality and have excellent tech support if you ever need it. Their laptops are cheap compared to other if you just need a basic laptop, nothing fancy. I am an IT Analyst and we work with nothing with Dell servers, computers, etc...so far their tech support is great...

Personally if it was a laptop only to use for the interent, I would buy an old mac g4 laptop off of ebay. They are selling for like $300 now some of the old 400mhz ones and they are better than many laptops in my opinion.

I would recommend an hp, but pretty much anything that's not a Dell would be good for you. Dell lack in tech support and their computers are junk. I've talked with several people who agree with me. My dad even says for his business he's not longer going to deal with dell computer. So when it comes times to get new ones, they wont be a dell.

Go to tigerdirect.com and you'll find some great deals.
They won't be dell or hp, but you might find toshiba or sony. They have a few ACER under $600 with lots of power.
I'm a strong believer is dell and this link gives options below $600. Go with the inspiron.
