People that live in the country and not just for the 'school run'. Its to protect their children in an accident they say. In the town, they sit in traffic jams, rarely go through a puddle. Most of them never ever use the 4 wheeldrive facility, I doubt they would know how to either.

I dont have a 4x4 myself. I could have done with one as we can get snowed in at times, although kids didnt moan when couldnt get to school. My son has one as needs one for his work in forestry.
They do tend to be used as a fashion accessory. As did the MPV's.People had a baby & had to have a big 7 seater! The number of them at school gates with one child in each!

No one should pay more road tax than anyone else, this is just another way of getting more tax out of the motorist.
I agree with everything you say, maybe we should tax mp every time they tell lies!

Sounds like discrimination to me. Singling out a small group to pay extra taxes for no good reason.
What difference does it make? Maybe people with 2X4 should pay the extra tax. See how stupid that sounds. A tax to use the roads , is just that, a tax to use the roads.
I say base the tax on the number of axles that you have, either driven or not.

Its a simple matter of supply and demand, like most things in the west. If you want one buy it,it just costs a bit more to run it! The next new car fad will come along and everyone will want that sort of car and the government will tax that item because it will raise more money (i remember when diesel was cheaper than petrol - everyone uses diesel now so it costs more). If you don't want to pay extra 4x4 tax don't buy one, simple!

No

The tax issue is crap

4x4's take up little more space on the road than a regular car, as for poloution tax is already on the fuel used sp the more you use the more you have to pay, this is just a way of the shoddy labour government of taxing a tax

Well how about exempting the basic Land Rover from the highest tax band? People who genuinely need a 4x4 aren't going to be bothered by lack of air conditioning, no 10 disc CD changer, no on-board TV, lack of leather seats etc.

No. But for now they have a way around the issue - buy one first registered before 23rd March 2006, as CO2 emissions band G for tax purposes does not apply to cars first registered before that date.
