The thing to keep in mind when ordering used (and I've had mainly good experiences) is that you are dealing with individual dealers. I believe each person has a rating of how past customers have rated their experiences. So buying a book from a guy with a 95% rating over a guy with 70% would be preferable. But like I said, mostly positive experiences.

Over four years I've sold around 800 used books on Amazon. In that time, I think I've done refunds for less than ten because (1) the customer didn't read the description and was unhappy for some reason or (2) the book didn't arrive. Most of my customers were pleased with the quick shipment and the packing.

I'm not an Amazon book dealer now so I can tell you that customer experiences DO vary. I took pride in describing the books accurately and shipping within 24 hours, not the 48 hours that Amazon gave me. There are other book dealers who don't give more than bare details. Look for more complete descriptions when buying and also the ratings of the seller.

I do sell on-line at Amazon and on eBay. Is it reliable and safe? I would have to say yes because with Amazon you have some recourse if you can't get things resolved with the vendor.

Agreed, read the descriptions thoroughly and check out feedback. You can get some brand new books for a total of $3.50 (that's 1 penny plus postage and handling) for media mail in the US - not a bad deal.

I've ordered from a few myself - never received garbage, but a few I would have rated less than the vendor did, but still not serious.

I've been ordering used books thru Amazon and haven't been stung yet. Be sure to read the blurb written by the seller. I avoid buying books from sellers who do not give descriptions of their books. Remember the reason why you are buying -if it's just to read what's the difference-if it's for your library then you have to be more careful and willing to pay a little more. If you find a good seller stay with them if you can. Personally, I highly recommend Amazon's used book service.

I order used books form amazon all the time. I have yet to have any problems. Look at the sellers rating and make sure that you leave feedback. Each time I have ordered books they arrived quickly. I would recommend that you at least order a book and see for yourself.

I buy three or four used books via Amazon a month, and only had a problem once. I resolved that with the seller with a day.

My family & I have used Amazon.com several times to buy books. It's always been a pleasant experience.

And remember: if you don't like what you get, you can always apply to your credit card company for a refund.

Amazon doesn't sell the books themselves, but refers you to vendors who do. They'll remove a vendor who consistently screws up, but some will be better than others.

I have had better luck finding good used books using http://www.abebooks.com/ or http://www.alibris.com/ .
