I've been playing soccer all my life, 17 years, and I've always noticed that not that many people play soccer and everyone hates it, WHY!?!?!?!?!

It's a matter of understanding the sport. The U.S. doesn't hate soccer, they just don't understand it. How can we?
There is little coverage in the newspapers and on TV. All of the sports idols in the U.S. come from Am. Football, Baseball, Basketball, Hockey, and NASCAR. In some ways soccer lacks the big play hook which is usually followed by a delay, where if you're the player you get all of the focus for a minute and if you're the fan you get to see a half dozen replays of the play. Am. Football has that huge defensive hit that lays the offensive player out, Baseball has a diving catch by an outfielder who walks off the field with they ball held high, Basketball has the blocked shot, Hockey the fights, and NASCAR the wrecks.
The other thing we don't have is the Dads who understand soccer. Dads can't teach soccer to their kids because they don't understand it.
We just don't have the Dads playing in the backyards with their kids. I started following soccer about 6 years ago when my daughter started playing. For most of that time, I have coached her team. I teach the kids skills that I research but what I can't provide them is tacticle skills that one learns from experience.
A final point about soccer in the U.S. is that soccer is an expensive sport. In the youth leagues, teams have to travel to play the better competition. This eliminates most players from lower income families from playing. That's were most of the worlds best players come from.

I believe everyone hates it because they can not play it. Soccer (or football as it is rightfully called) is one of the most complex games on the planet and one of the hardest to play. Unfortunately most people these days seem to decide to hate things that they can not do and don't understand rather then trying to get involved in the activity.
America also has a lot of other sports such as American "football" and hockey. These were introduced to the country and became popular before soccer so less people were willing to convert to a new sport.
We have the same problem is Australia (although it is improving) and women's soccer well no one in interested in that.

It don't know it's known all over the world and America just doesn't like it. I wish every1 did. Some people make fun of me for playing soccer and call me a soccer geek! I like soccer and my dad is the one that taught me how to play and I'm better then most of the boys that play!!! My mom is Brazilian which is probably why I can play good cuz In Brazil they are CRAZY for soccer!

cuz other countries just play soccer. sure they have other sports but they only have 1 major sport while compared to the US they have more than 1 major sport. as soccer is a relatiely new sport not only the mls has to compete with the sports here and fans but the well developed leagues around the world as well. people hate soccer here in the US because we dont dominate that sport like we do as the others, they find it boring as well.

we've a lot of alternative activities that we persist with: a million) soccer, 2) Baseball, 3) Basketball, 4) NASCAR, 5) Hockey, 6) MMA, 7) Boxing, 8) golfing, 9) Tennis, 10) IRL to call some.

People in other countries around the world are brought up on soccer, when here it's baseball, football and hockey. Soccer was also invented in Europe.

Because in america Baseball and Basketball are the most popular sport in america but soccer in united kingdom is really popular and i dont know why americans hate soccer .. its there reason why they dont like it .

Because here in America we have other sports that are popular like Baseball and Football (not soccer). =) We also have NASCAR and Hockey which are popular as well, oh, and don't want to be dissed by the basketball fans...lol.

Because, americans like " action " . They consider soccer as a girl sport witch makes me mad, because I aswell live in the US and love soccer. It is the greatest sport to come on this land.

I think its that Americans prefer a sport that has more goals etc.
However, its the greatest sport in the world and i am sure its going to take off over there big time very soon.
