from joberg, take a bus/drive to Phalaborwa. it's a small town with a gate into Kruger. i went to Mozambique after this, to Tofu Bay, which is amazing, but if you're driving alone, then don't do this, as the roads into M'bque are a bit dodgy, and it's best to have someone who knows the area to drive.
Durban is supposed to be lovely. if you drive down along the coast, you hit all the tourist areas (garden and sunshine route) but they are well worth it. make sure you stop off in Tsitsikamma/Storms River and try the Zip wires over the 'anyon and 'jungle', and if you're really brave, the worlds biggest bunjee!
Cape town is the best place, so make sure you leave plenty of time for here. the township tours are something you have to do - don't worry about all the horror stories, the people are lovely, and since you're in a guided tour and the communities get money for this, they welcome you into their homes.
camps bay/clifton is amazing for the beach, but the sea is cold - also, along the promenade here, visit 'somerville' resturant between 4-6 o'clock for half price cocktails each day! table mountain is amazing. enough said. for souveniers, green market in cape town centre is nice, but Sea Point (near camps bay) is the best. sells everything you could want. The west coast is supposed to be nice.
ooh, and when near cape town, Solole Game Reserve is worth a visit! i worked there for a while, but they gave buck, bufalo and a black rhino, which you can sometimes get very close to on a game drive, and the staff there are great!
observatory, a small town outside of cape town is my favorite ever place. it has the best bars and resturants! for the best bars in cape town, go to long st. cool runnings and stones are great, and mamma africas is good for proper african food!
hope that helps a bit, have a fantastic time!! x

Exellent! A road trip is the best way to see SA.
From Joburg, head East to Mpumalanga province and the Kruger Park. Then South and Southeast to Kwazulu-Natal. From Durban keep hugging the coast on the N2 highway - through Transkei, the eastern Cape, the southern Cape (Garden Route) and end in Cape Town. Stop and stay wherever it looks nice. This should take about two weeks at a leisurely pace. 3 Weeks is better.
Also, better to do it with someone - safety-wise and company.

Be sure to speak to the people in every area and listen to the responses. The books and many people on this site do not have the answer to the future of the country, the local people do. Splurge when you hit Cape Town or JoBurg or Durban but try the local places and give them a tale to tell about you after you leave too. It is easy to connect and gain as well as give. Place yourself in context...
Travel is safe and easy, if you use common sense. Africans are getting on with their lives and reaching for ever better conditions. Tip generously and enjoy local food and music.
Recognize you are a guest in a great and growing, changing country with a recent and deadly past brought about by people like you. Respect the land and the people and you will have the time of your life.

You will have a great time. Don't spend to much time in Jo'burg but be sure and hit the Drakensburg mtns, Kruger Park, then down Thur Swaziland via Jeeps Reef, couple of relaxing days on the coast north of Durban and then down to the Garden Route to Capetown where you should do a wine tour. Food is good and inexpensive. Be aware that you need to pay for gas with cash as they do not take credit cards. Have a great holiday.

Its great that you are coming here, I suggest you look into joining a bus tour instead of doing it by yourself.
By joining a trip you will get to see the tourist sights and be safer.
There are many great tours that are worth the money when your safety is concerned.
The only taxi that is safe to use (if you are a foreigner) is one with a yellow sign on the roof - and you are the only passenger. Public transport consists of minibuses with 20 people squashed inside - these are called taxis in South Africa. DO NOT USE THESE

First: Zurich lies in Switzerland, no longer any incorrect way around. 2nd: Switzerland is land locked. you will might desire to hop off at a eu port, case in point Bordeaux (France) as maximum vessels from South Africa to Europe flow with the help of Europe's coast and not with the help of the Mediterranean. with the help of Bordeaux, there might desire to be a prepare connection to Zurich. good success!
