No more painful than an immunization. So it's not seriously abusive. But really pretty ignorant, in my opinion. I think a person should have the right to decide for THEMSELVES whether they want pierced ears or NOT !!!!

Abuse isn't cut and dry. Abuse isn't only hitting and attacking a child. Abuse is ignoring their needs, not supplying them with their basic needs and denying them the right to make a choice.

Obviously as a parent to a newborn you make many choices on your childs behalf ie when and what they eat, what they wear etc BUT ear piercing a newborn baby is making a choice on an issue that shouldn't even be an issue!

I don't know if that makes sense but I conclude, YES, it IS CHILD ABUSE.

That baby will have holes in their ears forever whether they like it or not.

dictionary definition. Abuse is a general term for the use or treatment of something (person, thing, idea, etc.) that causes some kind of harm to the abused person.
in my opinion yes of course it is and i am appalled that it is possible to pierce a child's ear. you cannot and would not tattoo a child. Neither would you scar a child anywhere else, the child has no say in whether or not they want their ears piercing, they are often too young to really choose and even if old enough they are still not old enough to make an informed opinion. I do not understand why we should subject a child to this barbaric act in the name of beauty. this is the will of the parent and not the child and i do not not understand how any loving parent can subject their child and often baby to this abuse. because in every sense of the word. you cannot possibly compare this with inoculation which is designed to protect a child. this is simple vanity.

I noticed someone mentioned 1 and 2 years olds having their ears pierced. If you are going to peirce a child's ears around that age or even up to 4 years of age, you have to monitor the child constantly because he/she would be playing with the peircing.

When the child is old enough to make the decision for themselves (I'd say over 8) then they could have it done, personally I think under this age is just for vanity, and especially in small babies, why inflict pain on a child for no reason other than vanity?
What if they grow up and decide they don't want their ears pierced? Like you said, it's scarring them for life! Bloody pointless if you ask me!

i don't think it is child abuse but, i feel you should not pierce a child's ears until they can make the decision on their own....like when they 13. you are right you could be possibly scarring them for life. speaking from experience my parents had my ears pierced when i was an infant and when i got bigger (like a teenager) my earrings appeared crooked so, i had my ears re-pierced to straighten them out and i still have the original scars. i also have known children who's ears became severely infected because they don't know better not to touch them while they are healing.

Yes. It isn't necessarily like beating a child. Why does an infant need to be "accessorized"?? It's a bit disturbing honestly and definetally not cute. Piercing a young child or babies ears is like circumcising them...why fix something that isn't broken? It is taking away the rights to a child's own body for no reason.

No, it is not abuse ,
provided, it is done in a professional way.

many quite small children ,have their ears pierced,
by tradition,
In some sections of the community,
.ear-rings are a sign of status .

I personally, did not have my children's ears pierced ,
When they were little , --------my choice .-------
( they opted for that themselves, as teenagers ;)

there seems to me, to be far too much meddling
in family affairs,
from outside busy-bodies , these days .

As i say, ear -piercing is not cruel ,
or an abuse, of a child , in my estimation .

I hate, this latest craze, for bizarre multiple piercings ,
LOL! Kids !!
but then again , i am not as ' kool ' as i was .
