Spit up comes up within an hour after feeding. It looks and smells like formula. It may be a little bit sour, but it still strongly resembles formula or breastmilk.

Vomit comes any time, but usually longer than an hour after the feeding has ended. It come from deeper in the stomach and it smells really bad and very sour. It smells like puke.

Hope this helps.......

When it's vomit, you'll know it. It usually comes shooting out of the mouth more forcefully (think of The Excorcist). As long as baby is still playful, he's OK. If baby is vomiting a lot (after every meal), call for an appointment. However, even knowing this, I called the doctor the first time my first baby vomited. That was upsetting!

It's really common for a baby to have acid reflux. You may want to look it up on the internet to help you decide if that is a possibility. Then, take your baby to the doctor.
