I have comcast cable internet...have a direct coax to the modem then a CAT5 ethernet cord to my pc? will chaging to CAT6 improve preformance?

no. The modem only has a CAT5 so you can not get more from it

No it does not. It wont help to improve the performance.
Reason is that all the CAT5 cables (even if it is the worst one) are capable to support 100 Mbps. Most probably both your PC and modem have Fast Ethernet (100 Mbps) ports.
On the other hand your uplink speed much lower than this.

You will only need CAT6 for the Gigabit Ethernet.

Rule of thumb Cat5/Cat6
Cat6 has better noise rejection than Cat5. Over long runs and a 'noisy' (not sound but EMI) environment, Cat6 should be an improvement.

Changing the, probably 10' max, cable from your modem to your router would be a waste of time and money.

Not for your setup it will not. Cat6 is generally used for Gigabit networks and your setup, especially from the Cable modem, is going to be limited to the cable modems speed, usually 2~5 MBits.

Stay with your cat5e. If you want faster performance, upgrade your cable speed.
