What I mean is they are putting charges on credit cards without costomer's consent, overcharging, etc, and hoping that the customer doesn't notice or won't complain?
Banks, credit card companies, on-line merchants, etc have all done this to me and my family lately.
And try calling "customer service" to actually talk to someone.

You really have to be an informed customer these days no matter who you're dealing with. As you mentioned, institutions that you used to be able to trust such as your personal bank seem to be more interested in fleecing you for more money than anything else these days and don't get me started on the advertising that we're bombarded with on a daily basis...

First of all, reputation isn't the same today as it was in the past. Today, we have many large corporations owned by faceless investors. These corporations are only concerned about increasing shareholder value - this isn't necessarily a bad thing - it's what they are expected to do.

In the past, we had many more small ma & pop companies. They did business in their local communities and had a reputation to defend. They were more concerned with making the customer happy than squeezing out another $1 of profit. It's not like they could just pack up and leave town if their reputation got tarnished.

Why do businesses cheat people? Let's face it. People are dumb. They can tack on charges and legally slip things by their customers. They don't expect the customers to challenge. If they do, it's only a small portion of them. Plus, it's hard for the little guy to take on a large corporation with expensive lawyers over a small $25 charge.

So, I agree with you. The system is setup today to make cheating the smaller guy a much easier task.
