It's likely that you won't be able to stop her from having an account. Plus, sheltering her too much isn't good either! just talk to her and ask her to place her profile on private this way only her friends can actually be her friends and she can't be searched with her information showing. Make your own account and become her friend so you can see her profile and then have some trust in her. don't demand a password ect... or else she'll just make another profile. You're not going to be able to sway her friends to change to a kid-friendly site with her... so try to tackle this from a different prospective or else she'll resent you.

Myspace gets a total bad rap. Is television bad because HBO shows nudity and has swearing?
Myspace has settings that will not allow people over the age of 18 to contact her. Just communicate with your daughter and make it so you have to approve your daughters profile and what she puts on it. IE: no personal information, no pictures...
By communicating with her you can set the boundaries and let her participate in something that her friends are so she doesn't feel left out.

I would suggest www.facebook.com it is a place for teenagers and college students to interact with their friends at school and family members. I agree that there aren't to many safe places online but some of these places you can check out for safety and see how you feel about your daughter visiting them.
Good luck

There are NO safe places, I looked at a couple of the ones other people mentioned and did a random search with a random name and STILL came up with girls posing almost nude and topless guys looking for you-know-what. I know they get directed to videos, but a lot of them are pornographic. My older daughter (19) was looking on the video search for a song and right in the middle it stopped and there was a porn video. This trash is hidden EVERYWHERE on these sights and is rampant!
You need to know her user name and password, You need to set a program on your computer that monitors her activities. I am telling you by experience , NO ONE is safe on these sites!
I even tried to look up some funny vidios and was bombarded by nasty ones! It is sad there are no clean places to go !!!

I would suggest neopets.com. It's for preteens and teens! You get to make your own virtual pets, take care of them, play games and other fun stuff like that. I'm sure once she joins and tells her friends about it, they'll join too!

I personally think that there is no real "safe" webspace. What's best is to teach your daughter safe web practices like never giving out personal information like addresses/phone numbers.

there are no SAFE places. but you can protect her by either sitting right there with her while she's online or educating about the dangers of giving out personal information.
even if a kid doesn't give out their personal information their friends will quite often give out her info thinking it is ok.
go here. there are programs you can download to help protect her. lots of info to
