Wow, this is a broad question.

The distance between Los Angeles, California and El Paso, Texas, is lesser than El Paso to Beaumont, Texas.

I've made the trip from LA to Houston (pretty much a straight shot on I-10) in less than 30 hours. It was about 1550 miles. I stopped in Palm Springs for breakfast and a little sightseeing, Phoenix for lunch, El Paso for dinner, and Fort Stockton for coffee. I probably could have knocked 7 or 8 hours off the trip if I didn't do it alone and hit drive-thrus, but I wasn't in much of a hurry. I did get stopped by the INS east of El Paso.

If you fly, it is about three to four hours, if you drive, from LA about four hours to get out of the state, four more hours to get through Arizona, three and a half more to get through New Mexico.... then Texas.
