Why do you yawn when you're tired and not tired?

I recently had this discussion with my Brother-in-law and he said he read in a scientific journal that yawning has nothing to do with you being tired or not. They have no idea why you yawn, but the most common time you yawn is when you are about to change the level of activity you have. for example athletes will yawn quite a bit before a game. you will yawn most often when you are about to go to bed.

You can yawn when you're bored too. My guess is that if your body isn't very active or it's getting tired, you yawn. Something like that maybe =)

You are not getting enough oxygen. Slow deep breath or 2 will help. Also, get more rest. Go to bed before 10 if you can for a few days and see if you feel better. The body goes into a different cycle at 10 pm that lasts until 2am. If you are up past 10 it is likely you will also be hungry, you eat and gain weight you may not want and sleep restlessly when you eat late.

well i know you yawn when you're tired or bored. Perhaps when you yawn when you're not tired is because someone around you just yawned. have you ever heard that yawns are contagious?

It is a very known fact - u yawn involuntarily when there is not enough oxygen to ur bloodstream. So it doesn't matter if u r tired or not.

Yawning stretches the muscles in the neck, thus increasing blood flow and oxygen that gets to your brain.

Because you are breathing shallow, and aren't getting enough oxygen.
