They use sri lankan rupees. here is the current conversion. Saturday, March 24, 2007
1 Indian Rupee = 2.51865 Sri Lanka Rupee

unofficially, many shops do accept indian rupees. its best to change to sri lankan rupees at the airport, or even before you leave india.
sometimes you will get a better deal for usd than for indian rupees

The government of India does not even accept its own currency.There is talk of foreign dollars coming in.
