yellow
because we only associate those colours with danger because its natural human instinct. nature's colours for danger are red and yellow, so yellow makes sense really...

Studies have always shown that the first color a person sees is red, it has something to do with wavelengths of the light that hits the color. The last color a person sees is purple. The time it takes you to see a color goes in order of the rainbow spectrum: red, orange, yellow, green, blue, indigo, violet.
So if you were to make a stop sign that would catch people's attention with a different color, your best bet would be orange.

White (with red o black writing)

Orange, yellow, and green are already associated with other types of signs like road construction, children at play, exit signs, etc. Black, grey, and brown are too dark and unnoticable. And, blue, pink, and purple would be a litlle goofy and not really make you think "stop" when you saw them.

White marking on blacvk background. Just like the colour of Pirates Flag. Also, Also, White on black gives the best contrast than the combination of any two othe colours, so it is more visible and hence easier to read.

Red has always meant danger and we are internationally programmed to react to that as a warning so no other colour would work with the same affect. Think of the number of poisonous things in nature that are red.. warning us to stay away.. surely this rule should continue to be followed

I've seen stop signs previously of eight sides and size equal to those in USA with white background and black lettering on
several central Pacific Islands formerly administered by the
USA. It was my understanding that the red faded too quickly in sunshine so white was introduced. 80% of the road traffic is bicycle. The signs are easily seen in tropical moonlight.

I would use yellow, for the simple fact that being red/green colour blind yellow shows up better for me.

Orange or yellow, and to a lesser extent Pink - it would need to be a bright colour that does not blend into most backgrounds.

(Pink would be like "oh Please Stop" in a Camp voice)

I suppose orange because it stands out and would get your attention. Definately not green because it would stand out against a background of trees or shrubs, same with brown.
