Try calling a local store like Best Buy. If they don't have something cheap or used for you, I'm sure that they can recommend a place where one is available. :]

You could probably get a really cheap one in your local newspaper's classified. People are always buying new laptops and looking to the sell the old one they have. And i'm sure a used one will be fine for a child. Just check it out before taking it home.

some refurbished laptops at costso.com are slightly cheap. but you could get a mac really cheap if you are part of a school involved program and then you could get it through the education program they have.

if buy cheap you mean (400-500) dollars then Compaq and Acer are goo brand name options that will provide enough power to IM, word process (all of the basics)... PS stick with Intel processors... i have had bad experiences with AMD.
