Peyote is illegal because it causes hallucinations.
Only if you can prove you are part of the Peyote religion can you take it legally, but the places where you can obtain it is pretty much only Arizona, New Mexico and Texas.

Peyote is used by the Blackfoot tribe (my people) during ritual, smoked through a pipe in a circle around a fire to induce "spirit visions", although it is illegal to own , cultivate, or even pick up wild growing peyote, if you can prove your blackfoot ancestry, then you can obtain a legal permit to own, cultivate, and pick peyote. the legal permit although, requires more than just proving your blood, you must also be trained by one of 5 tribal elders in the entire country who are officially recognized as the keepers of the peyote.

I believe it is illegal in all states, why is it? I'm not sure, since it is totally natural, it is not manmade. Native Indian culture uses peyote in various ways, during many different ceremonies. If you do a search for it, you'll find a wealth of info.
