Have you had a neck injury? Car accident/whiplash - sporting injury? Suggest a reputable chiropractor to xray your bones see what's out of alignment. Most nerve problems in hands come from the neck. If chiropractor is not possible, find a massage therapist/rolfer to work the muscles so the neck can re-align itself (takes longer). I speak from personal experience & healing.

First, see your primary care physician, make sure you mention it, along with any other health problems you might have. Even if you think they are silly. See if they will test for Carpal Tunnel.

Do you work at a computer or adding machine for extended periods? Or write a lot? Do you work in a factory where you make the same hand/arm movements all day long?

I did. Braces at night help a lot, but they have to fit properly.
Good luck with it.

Chances are it is carpal tunnel syrndrome. I had the same symptoms and that's what my dr said mine was. I got the wrist splints for it and wore them faithfully. Now I don't have that problem. At least not again.
