OK, sure, be like everyone else.
Start cutting your wrists for attention. Be selfish and start pitying yourself while there are children starving on the other side of the world... Cause you know, your life is just soooo bad. Write dumb poetry that only talk about such things as death or how your life sucks. Have your parents worry about you and take you to a therapist. Then brag about having a therapist at school.

Wear pants that are so tight you lose all feeling in your legs. Wait. That might not be tight enough. Why express yourself with colour? Wear only black. Every day. In fact you should despise colour altogether.

Come on. Don't be emo just to fit it.
"In order to be a non-conformist you must wear all black all the time."
Um. Can you detect the irony?

Emo has absolutely nothing with cutting your wrists. Stupid teenagers somehow associated emo with cutting. You can slit your wrists and not be emo, and you can be emo and not slit your wrists. It's drives my fu*king insane because wearing dark colors does not make you emo and emo IS NOT wrist slitting. Don't try to fit into some stupid stereotype. Dress however you want. If you like wearing black, wear black. If you like wearing skinny jeans, where skinny jeans. Dress how YOU want for yourself, not becuase you want other people to call you emo.

And a lot of the people that are replying to your question are people we would label as 'preps'. They don't know a sh*t about this, and are saying what they hear, not what they know. Take it from me, someone that is constantly put under some stupid label, don't try to categorize yourself. We have enough stereotypical morons in the world. Don't become another one of them.

observe.if thats really want you wanna look like, and how you wanna be percieved as then do it. if youre doing it because its a trend, dont. the 'scene' trend will start up about mid-august, when all us teenies are back in the middle\high school sterotype ritual again.
tips:
hot topic is more punk, but they've gotten to accept the styles of goth and emo as well.
get a myspace. basically psot your soul on it
find your inner poet/songwriter
post those on your myspace too
grow out your hair and then cut it in a weird way, like longish bangs in the front, short and spiked in the back.
dying your hair dark is not important, its the fact that youre hair has been dyed, and most likely an unnatural color.
take tons of pictures of yourself
peircings help
converse, vans for shoes
black/grey and anything dark = main staple
hoodie is present at most times.
you do not need to cut to be seen as emo trust me
you need to be OBSESSED with a few bands, and have a load more that you say you love. normally rock.

just so you know, ease yourself into things like this. style makeovers that happen quickly are only allowed on what not to wear and such. most people get called posers. an 'emo' at my school (who had been a preppy kind until last summer) just went back to being himself, and now he's got a load of new friends. of course, preps specialize in being fake so....

oh-i forgot
skinny jeans, band tees, dark/ black nail polish
eyeliner/shadows (look up davey from AFI)
studded belts, checkered belts
two belts at one time
mesh clothing
silver beads (claires)

to be an emo wannabe these are the steps
1. be crazy
2.dye your hair a weird color (black with pink or yellow or just plain black)

7.buy some black eyeliner and apply it

emo is so passe. it has become a cliche. by the mere fact that i could easily give you a laundry list of styles and habits to adopt, emo has become a formula. why make yourself fit into a mold?? be yourself. much more interesting.
