Instead of paying out for more ram, you can increase your virtual memory.
This makes your computer faster. Takes around a gigabyte of space. Not recommended if your hard disc is less then 20 Gb.
instructions:
1. Hold down the windows key and press the Pause/Break button at the top right of your keyboard (another way is right clicking your computer and clicking Properties).
2. Click on the advanced tab.
3. Under performance, click Settings.
4. Then click the advanced tab on the button that pops up.
5. Under virtual memory at the bottom, click Change.
6. Click Custom Size button.
7. For the initial size (depending on your H.D space), type in anywhere from 1000-1500 (although some use 4000), and for the maximum size type in anywhere from 2000-2500 (although some use 6000).
8. Click Set, and then exit out of all the windows.
9. Finally, restart your computer.
10. you now have a faster computer and 1-2Gb of virtual RAM!
It seems, not a lot of people know that. I found out from some one Else's answer, to a similar question, some time ago.

As above - crucial. Good thing about crucial apart from the good price is the pc analyser they have which will scan your system and advise the correct ram for your system and tell you how many spare slots you have etc. Nice little tool. I've bought from there with no problems.
Also you cant have too much memory so :
a) get as much as your pc will allow (the tool above will advise)
b) as much as you can afford
Its easy to fit yourself. If i remember it comes with an easy to follow guide. You just slot them into the board inside.
Adding hardware to your pc is nowhere near as hard as pc technicians make out! most things are just plug and play with maybe some minor tweaking

u need to purchase dimm sticks of ram and they must be installed inside your pc. there is no such thing as a disk to install ram. first you need to open up your tower and on the mother board u should see 1 or 2 chips about 4 inches long at each end there will be a little type clip that locks them in. each motherboard varies you should have 2 or 3 slots this is where the dimm sticks go. flip the tabs and remove the existing one. to re install slide it in and u must push somewhat hard on it and the clips will loc it in!! good luck. how much ram do u have. keep in mind 512 is avg. compaq most that i have seen had 64,128, some 256.

JimJo make sure you specify the exact model of compaq presario you have when searching for memory; I use Crucial and Kingston regularly but if you can't find what you're looking for, try Offtek too

resist the urge to buy cheap generic memory!

RAM doesn't come as a disc, it comes as a chip, which is quite easy to pu in- you just pop it in place.
you have to find out what type of RAM your computer takes- it will say on the packaging
its probably DDR if its quite new....
go on ebay! you get some good bargains on there!
a basic RAM upgrade is 512mb, which should be enough for normal computer use (email, music, dvds ect)
i use 1.5gb RAM, but i run Final Cut Pro and Photoshop CS2, so it all depends on your requirements.

Siempre he estado contenta con las compras y los productos que he recibido de sitios web, lo último que he comprado ha sido una memoria RAM de 1 Gb, la memoria se ha hecho su función y se puede ver claramente el cambio así que seguro que voy a comprar otra.
