Numbness is a sign of a loss of function of your sensory nerves. This can come from either a compression of the sensory nerves (anywhere from the cord to the area that is feeling numb) or from loss of blood flow to the nerves inervating the area. The fact that its only at night is a good thing and leads me to believe that it is positional to some degree. If it is occuring outside of him lying down then a consultation with a neurologist would be in order. As you say, it is only at night so it is likely due to the way he is laying and the surface he is laying on. Try different positions (on his back would be ideal if its a hand/arm problem...if he "can't" sleep on his back he may suffer from apnea as well, which could add to such a problem); see if that helps. Next step would be a different surface, it may be that the bed is too hard and compressing the arms to the point of losing some blood flow or compressing the nerves directly. It would help to know the distribution of the numbness....is it just one area...the entire arm...the right side or left or bilateral...etc. Is he overweight, diabetic, history of strokes, young old....etc..

Pain relievers, by the way, will do nothing for this, and presuming it's not a more serious medical condition (which again based on the fact that its only when he's sleeping, it probably isn't) it isn't a "medication" type of issue...it's likely a physical compression.

Every youngster is unique---you wish each and every grownup to be unique :) I enormously advocate Dr Harvey Karp's "The Happiest Baby at the Block". Check your library for it, or the DVD. He has five tactics to aid toddlers be comfortable. What labored for me for encouraging crib slumbering....pre-warmed the crib; loud white noise; tight swaddle with my stinky blouse; made 'bumpers' within the crib so she's simply in a single nook---toes towards the only finish, head towards a rolled up blanket, one facet towards the crib facet, the opposite facet towards one more rolled up blanket---so each and every side of her continues to be touching some thing. However, as you be taught extra.....I am one of these colossal fan of babywearing---notably whilst it is not your first little one! At 4 weeks, simply use a fleece pouch or a Moby sort wrap (stretch knit fabric). You may even make those relatively without problems your self---the wrap may even be made and not using a stitching desktop. It recreates the womb and is so convinient for you; esp. with one more little one. This does not aid at night time, LOL, however it is fine for the day.

The only answer would be, he's got poor circulation for going on! What would be suggested, is to go to your doctor and talk to them about certain methods or even medications to improve his circulation because, it could lead to a stroke down the road!
