The Golden Compass is an exceptionally good book by Philip Pullman. It's a finely crafted fantasy story involving a young girl and a polar bear who travel back and forth through parallel universes. Its part of a trilogy that includes The Amber Spyglass and the Subtle Knife.

I don't know many fantasy novels, besides Lord of the Rings of course, wich i suppose you already read. If you did and liked it, try anything from the same author. Actually, try anything from the same authors as a book you already read. If it doesn't help, ask to someone who works there for a good fantasy book. That way, you will read your own things and be able to answer those questions in the future.
If you're willing to go into sci-fi novels, my all-time favorite is Dune, by Frank Herbert.

"The True Confessions of Charlotte Doyle" by Avi. This is a great book, historical fiction about a girl who runs away to sea on a tall ship in the 19th century.
"The Snarkout Boys and the Avocado of Death" by Daniel Pinkwater; really funny, about the strange adventures of some high school students.
"The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe" by C.S. Lewis.
"The Hobbit" by Tolkien.
"Wizard of Earthsea" by Ursula LeGuin

The Dragonriders of Pern series by Anne McCafrey is a great series of books about settlements of communiies built into the cliffs who use firebreathing dragons to battle "thread" a very dangerous invader from a nearby planet that kills vegetation. It examines lots of coming of age aspects of childhood through both the male and female perpective. Check them out, they are written so well and the planet of Pern is amazing. I read them more than once when I was a kid.

Ok, books by Tamora Pierce (my favorites are the Tortall ones), are excellent for that age group. So are the Christopher Paolini books, and the3 Artemis Fowl books by Eoin Colfer.
have fun

try sabriel it is fantasy fiction and is apropriet for an eighth garder. the book is part #1 in a series by garth nix. it is an adventure of a younge girl who believes that her father is dead... her father being the abhorsen (a person who controls the dead for good for instance having to defeat greater dead like kerrigor)... she at theat time is the abhorson in waiting. the sequals lirael and abhorsen are better than the 1st in my opinion.

Do you like dragons? I'm not sure if these books are still in print or not, but they were good when I read them. They are all by Anne McCaffrey, they are called: Dragonsinger, Dragondrums, and Dragonsong. I did like her style of writing but the stories were good.
