I have an old computer that I want to put XP on. When I start it up I get the message about not having an operating system. Is my hard drive dead? Or what am I missing?

The computer meets minimum requirements for XP. There is no other operating system on it. I went to the bios and set the disc drive to be the first and only to boot but I still got the message about no operating system being present.

OK. go to your BIOS setup utility, you know how to get there?
on my machine i have to press "DELETE" thats how it os on mine, and change your boot sequence. if you want to install windows xp. change your "first boot sequence to"

CD ROM ONLY! thats what i learned here at my computer repair class. if that wont work. it should.

When you say "OLD COMPUTER" how "old" is it? You can't run XP on just any computer. I am not sure what the minimum requirement is but I think at least a Pentium 4 with 256mb RAM. You need a decent size HD for it too - min 20 GB as with updates it will occupy about 5 - 6 GB on the HD.

Does the HD have an OS on it like windows 95? If the HD was dead, XP installation would report NO HARD DRIVE, not NO OS. How are your trying to install it? Put XP setup disc in CD droive and restart computer. If BIOS is set to read from the CD drive first (it should be - if not go into the BIOS and change your boot sequence) XP will start and install if the computer meets the requirements. No prior OS is needed.

Windows XP requires a reasonably fast processor, absolute minimum of 64Mb RAM but it wont run well on less than 128 and 512 is preffered.
If you have that then set your CD drive as the first boot device and boot the machine with the XP disk already in the drive and the install should start. Setup will detect if you have a hard drive and wil partition it and format it for you.
