I reside in Boston and I've been working for 2 years. I'll be going back to college in Sept '07 and will work through July of this year. Can I get paid social security or some sort of unemployment benefit between July and september or while in grad school? If not why? If so, how does it work and what happens (taxes wise) if I work summer/winter breaks or start working again full time in 2009?
Thanks

If social security accepts a claim that you are disabled according to their rules, or if you're 62 or over, then yes you could collect it.

As for unemployment, if you're getting laid off in July, you could probably collect for August until you go back to school. You don't normally get unemployment comp if you quit voluntarily And it requires that you be available for work, which you might or might not be while you're in school, depending on class schedules and your willingness to seek and accept a job while you're in school.

If you work on summer and winter breaks, you'll pay taxes on that income as you normally would.
