If Americans were aware of the extent of black crime that the media ignores, you would have more to be concerned about than your dubious history.

American text books tend to cover history that affected the United States. We don't learn the history of Australia either, we learn about wars. We learn mostly about things that affected the United States in a significant way. We do learn about slavery, and we do learn about people like Rosa Parks, and Martin Luther King Jr...You don't hear me complaining because we don't have "Serbian-American" history in text books. And I'm sick of people saying every month is white history month. Why is it okay for African Americans to consider all "Caucasians"...white people. An Irish person isn't the same as a German person. An Italian isn't the same as a Greek. We may all have similar skin tones, but like African Americans we are all very different. Spanish history is in our text book, European history is in our text books, Asian history is in our textbooks, and so is African American history.

It's unfortunate that you had to receive some of the ignorant mssgs as answers to ur question. However, note this, you can celebrate your heritage as often as u like. Don't be condemned to a month, that's an insult in itself. Remember when it was a week? The history behind African Americans is far more superior than a textbook will ever reveal, especially if it isn't written by us. Do ur part, celebrate, enjoy, learn, and share as much and as often as u like. Our history is NOT a mystery!

It is not acceptable to them because they didn't "proof" it first. When I was in grade school, I was taught that the slaves and the indians "helped" the colonials.I am amazed by how much they know but choose to supress...especially when highlighting "white achievement". Many talk about the great achievements/inventions that their white forefathers accomplished. No one talks about how some of the slaves were freed thru Manumission if they invented something that could be used to make money for their slaveowner. (Maybe Ben Franklin wasn't such a genius after all...)Unfortunately, our history is in the eyes of many, an oxymoron, or an excuse to whine about our ancestors treatment. Remember our history has been supressed either explicitely or implicitely and any digging, is a renouncement of your orgins as an american. It is viewed as a rejection of the status quo, or the white ideal that shapes our society. This helps to keep them in fear of retaliation that we as blacks are not even concerned with. What whites need to realize is that we all do not want to participate in their culture, imitating their culture/ideals/ to the demise of our own.

Maybe THEY DON't EVEN INCLUDE OUR HISTORY IN TEXTBOOKS because you didn't have a history before the luckier ones amongst you came over here as slaves. Seriously, HOW CAN A RACE OF PEOPLE WHO NEVER INVENTED A WRITTEN LANGUAGE trace their history?

My textbook had black history, from egytian to modern... I made an A on those chapter test :)... it was American history and world history.
And I'm not sure if I want my history in text-books... they have a tendency to lie... a lot.

What history? You mean slavery, then segregation, then the whole civil rights movement? I believe that those are covered in most textbooks. If you're talking about pre-slavery Africa, then I guess you'll have to take a world history class for that. I don't really understand what you're complaining about.

If the first 3 unenlightened souls to answer this very good question would open their craniums a tad bit, perhaps they would figure out that perhaps there WERE many good things that blacks did before the civil war, but they are UNAWARE of these things because they were never put into the history textbooks for everyone to learn!

There isn't much to write about. The whites have accomplished more in History than blacks. America was built on whites not blacks. Whites fought for the freedom of slaves, whites fought for the freedom of this land, whites created laws and black history month, the list goes on and on. I think it's good to have a black history month, there is enough black history to be recgonized, but not enough to have pages upon pages of black history because it just isn't there.
