Open you windows file and check on the security status of your MS firewall. Set it to the desired protection level. That is free.
Go to CNET.com. In the lower left find the download area and open it. You'll find numerous pay and free programs for download. Add to your AVG another complimentary program called Antiviras AntiVir. It cleans what AVG can not!! It is free and like AVG can update daily and run at set times.
While your on the site consider adding Adaware, SpyBot, and CCleaner. you run them manually and they are easy removal tools for spyware and malware. Check with your internet provider for additional free protection via your toolbar. Comcast, for example, offers a wonderful Norton AntiSpware for my toolbar. Good Luck to you.

Salutations,
One of the very best free personal edition firewalls you can get is at www.symantec.com, it is the Sygate Personal Firewall and next to the Norton Suite, I would consider it one of the very best.
Also the best anti virus you can get is Symantec Anti Virus, it is great, it has an auto protect feature, to guard against any malware or spyware. scans, deep or just quick, and does a live update anytime you choose (preferably daily) to update your virus definition files. For more information about viruses and security risks can be obtained from the Symantec Web site.
A virus is a computer program that attaches a copy of itself to another computer program or document when it runs. Whenever the infected program runs or a user opens a document containing a macro virus, the attached virus program activates and attaches itself to other programs and documents.
Viruses generally deliver a payload, such as displaying a message on a particular date. Some viruses specifically damage data by corrupting programs, deleting files, or reformatting disks.
A worm is a special type of virus that replicates itself from one computer to another and can use memory. Worms generally exist inside other files, such as Microsoft® Word or Excel documents. A worm may release a document that already has the worm macro inside of it.
A blended threat combines the characteristics of viruses, worms, Trojan horses, and malicious code with server and Internet vulnerabilities to initiate, transmit, and spread an attack. Blended threats use multiple methods and techniques to propagate and attack, and cause widespread damage throughout a network.
In the context of Symantec AntiVirus, the term virus is used to cover all threats that work in a virus-like manner. Symantec AntiVirus can detect, delete, and quarantine viruses, and repair the side effects of viruses.
A security risk is a known program, in a category such as ad ware or spy ware, that may or may not present a risk to the security of a computer. Symantec Anti Virus can detect, quarantine, and repair the side effects of risks in these security risk categories
I hope this helps mate
Kind regards,

the most basic firewall is built into windows XP called "windows firewall". click start > control panel > then go to "windows firewall" > click on the bubble next to "On" > uncheck the "don't allow exceptions" check box if it is checked > then click on the "exceptions" tab > put a check next to all the programs you recognize and that you commonly use and uncheck all that you don't use or don't recognize > underneath the list of programs put a check near "display a notification when Windows Firewall blocks a program"
If you have downloaded something from AIM or AOL only put a check next to the one that involves with the Instant messenger program.
There are many other kinds of firewalls. go to http://download.com/Security-Spyware/2001-2023_4-0.html?tag=dir to look for many programs that can work.
Having two programs that are for anti-virus or anti-spyware can slow down your computer and can effect each others performance for removing viruses and spyware.
