Being clean and sober myself, and being a friend of Bill's, my children are learning about drugs and alcohol at a lot earlier age than most children. Each child has a different maturity level. I feel the best time for an in depth discussion about the harmful effects would somewhere between the ages of eight to twelve years old.

The best time to talk to your children about drugs is in grade school. It is never to young to talk to your children about drugs. Starting with smoking is always good. Children are learning quickly now and they look up to parent's the most. Also it is always good to talk about the results of doing drug and as they grow older you can add in pictures of the problems. Like for example smoking is the leading cause of lung cancer. By showing a child a picture of the lung the less chance they would smoke.

Well if they are under 10 they might forget because honesty they wouldn't care what you say about drugs and they would have other things on mind than listening to what you say about them. So it depends. Talk to the child around 12 and keep bringing it up to them because when they get older they will think back from what you said

As soon as they understand, you can start as soon as they ask about it , if they ask they are ready to know. Yo can begin explaining small things to introduce the subject, take examples from news and TV shows to comment about it .
