MAy be because of its policies of remaining nice to every one.India is a vast country but not as vast as compared to U.S and Russia.All these developed countries have less population because there area is vey spacious and not much people live there. Now a days, only literateand capable peple are allowed there.THe skillful ones work there and led that countries to the path of progress and our country lags behind inspite of giving a lot of educational facilities.
Second problem is our neighbouring countries.Many refugees are shifting to India from Bangladesh as its land is decreasing due to increasing sea level.Some people are entering India from Pakistan.THere are commuanl riads in Sri Lanka and so the Tamilians who have setteled there have been given an invitation to come to India.All these things are leading to population explosion and all the problems like illiteracy, price-rise, unemployment,pollution,slums, poverty etc. are created and our economic progress comes to a halt.

Look at the history of India versus the US. India has a longer history than the US. The US is relatively a young nation compared to other countries of the world. Plus India has a higher birth rate than the US due to a multitude of factors such as careers, demographics, socioeconomics, etc. Indians like having large families (especially many boys because girls are expensive) than folk in the US.
