The best success story I have heard or experienced myself is to quit cold turkey. Stop smoking, drinking, overeating on a particular day and don't look back. Try to remember how bad the habit was for you if you feel like going back. Just have a strong resolve and things will work out.

The only habit i've ever broke myself of was biting my nails. I would bite my nails even if there wasn't anything to bite. It was crazy. I got a job where my customers would always see my hands and I hated that my nails looked so bad so I just stopped one day. I think it's been almost 3 years now and I haven't done it since. It's nice.

The only way to do it is self control. If you want to do something, it's up to you to do it.

What you can do, is fill that time that you would normally be doing your bad habit, with something else. Like instead of drinking- read a book, hang out with friends (who don't drink), go see a movie...
