It all depends where you are living.
Football is the original name for what Americans call soccer. I think it is fine for Americans and Australians to call English football soccer because they have invented "football" leagues for their own countries.
However if you live in any other place on the globe football is football and soccer isn't a word. Therefore if there was a choice to call either English football football or soccer, football it would be.
I still don't understand why it is that a game played with your hands was called football in the first place, one would think they could be more original with the name.

The USA is the only place in the world where the term 'soccer' is used. Are you suggesting that the rest of the world should change the name of the worlds by far most popular sport to satisfy Americans?
By the way, I am American as well, and I think things are fine as is.

this is quite obvious cause we play soccer using our foot, and american football is played using hands, so it is stupid to call it football (american). so it is best for soccer.
