The main difference is that the Miss America program includes a talent competition, along with the swimsuit, evening gown, and interview. This year's winner, Miss Oklahoma sang for her talent.
January 29, 2007 – Miss Oklahoma Lauren Nelson from Lawton, Oklahoma was crowned Miss America 2007 tonight at the Aladdin, soon to be Planet Hollywood, Resort & Casino in Las Vegas. The Miss America 2007 final night of competition was broadcast live from Las Vegas, on CMT.
Nelson, age 20, is a student at the University of Central Oklahoma. She was crowned Miss America during the final night of competition, and sang “You’ll Be in My Heart” as her talent selection for the evening.
The first runner-up was Miss Texas Shilah Phillips, of Plano, Texas who earned a $25,000 scholarship after singing, “I Believe in You and Me,” as her talent.
Second runner-up honors and a $15,000 award went to Miss Georgia Amanda Kozak of Warner Robins, Georgia, who performed a Tap Dance to “Baby I’m A Star.”
Miss USA, on the other hand, is a precurser to Miss Universe. Also, there is Miss Teen USA which is part of the Miss USA pageant family.

"In 1952, Catalina Swimsuits founded the Miss USA and Miss Universe pageants as product promotion tools. Developed by the Miss America Organization, the Miss America program exists to provide personal and professional opportunities for young women to promote their voices in culture, politics and the community. Almost all contestants have either received, or are in the process of earning college or postgraduate degrees and utilize Miss America scholarship grants to further their educations. The Miss America Organization is the leading provider of scholarships for young women in the world. Although some young women compete in both Miss America and Miss USA, the two systems are completely separate."

they're different pageants, like Coke and Pepsi.
Miss America is the more traditional one. (Coke).
Miss USA is the one created to rival it. (Pepsi). It's the lead-in to the Miss Universe pageant, both of which are owned by Donald Trump.
Miss America is said to have more clout with the public, but you'll notice that only Miss USA is still shown on network TV.
I have no idea what happened to the talent portion. I guess it's still there, but not part of the telecast

Miss USA is owned by Donald Trump, and they have different competitors, but that's it. Also, Miss America is more of a chairty organizer while Miss USA is just an icon
