The as/400 is a batch processing system.
The advantages over a PC server is that the as/400 is a true multithreading system. Depending on the machine size the machine can handle hundreds to thousands of requests simultaneously.
The as/400 can do just about everything a pc server can which includes being a webserver, a domain server, a print server etc. There are no limits to the capabilities of the as/400
As an example: A major airline or car rental company usually use an as/400 to connect to a central database for real time information about available rentals, available seating on a flight or any flight.
The as/400 is not an interactive system like a PC is with a GUI, but the text based or web based interfaces make this type of system and ideal solution as you don't need to be worried about future OS compatiblity like vista did to many PC's----if I upgrade the as/400 OS, it will work. In some rare instances, an older system may need replacing due to support of older hardware.
