According to one study, there are over 80 million Americans between the ages of 26-46 (born from 1961-1981) that make up my generation, the so called Gen-X, or 13th gen.

Considering we still tune out (lowest voting rates) in politics, rarely vote, have only a 14% national leadership share (Gen X in the House, Senate, and Governors) where other generations were higher when they were at the same age..

Can America afford to have this generation ignore its responsibility to participate more, and can this generation afford ignoring its responsibility?

For the record, I vote. But I understand why so many people my age don't.

Not interested in hearing answers about Gen X being spoiled and whiners, because that argument also applies to older and younger generations as well, for different reasons.

Fellow Gen X'er here and I don't think that our generation is shirking responsibility. I vote, but completely understand why a lot of our generation does not. Unlike the generations before the Baby Boomers, we see the guy behind the curtain working The Wizard's controls. The BB'ers were the first to really open their eyes to it all, but we Gen X'ers have taken it farther. We are not irresponsible; we are discontent with the status quo and are making our feelings known in many ways...one of which is not voting, for some.

Fellow Gen-X'r here. The problem is the Baby Boomers have had their way from beginning to end in this country. They were the liberal hippies in the 60's, the selfish disco generation in the '70's and then the money grabbing managers of the '80's and 90's and of course soon they will be the geriatric curse as they wipe out Medicare and Social Security. We Gen'X'rs will reach retirement just in time for the backlash of rage against old people that the Baby Boomers will leave us as their last legacy.

Just look at popular culture...why do we still care about High School in the 1950's or Route 66...these things aren't relevant to Gen X'rs, but of course we simply don't have the market strength or political or economic clout of the Baby Boomers and most of us are still working for Baby Boomer directors and VP's.

The generations after Gen X will have it much better. We just had the dumb luck to be right after the Boomers...

Gen Xers had the misfortune of being after my generation, the Baby Boomers (1945-1964). We screwed it up for everybody. We started all the incredibly damaging garbage that is still stinking up the place, from political correctness, affirmative action, self esteem instead of achievement, moral equivalency, etc. We were so inflamed about injustice and inequality that we determined to lay a guilt trip on the whole country. And we did. So absorbed were we in ourselves that we didn't notice you. Gen X is probably repaying the favor.

Part of a democracy is having the choice not to vote. Gen X is know for expressing freedom, and this is one of the freedoms they express.
