Miss USA 2007 winner, Miss Tenesse Rachel smith , is she black or spanish or what?

My mom and sis say shes black,
but the only black gurl in the top 5 of Miss U>S>A 2007
was california,
the others didnt look black,
but they were very tanned up.

I was curious myself, so I looked it up...

"Rachel Renee Smith (born April 18, 1985 in Panama) is a beauty queen from Clarksville, Tennessee who won the Miss USA pageant in 2007 [1] and who previously had competed in the Miss Teen USA pageant. Smith is the fourth African American to win the Miss USA title."

I also attended a bridal show in January in Nashville and she was one of the models for the bridal fashion show... gorgeous girl. I just thought she was caucasion with really dark skin.

I think Rachel Smth is very cute, but not beautiful like you'd expect a Miss USA to be. But I think she'll be a good Miss USA.

I have a problem with the term "African American" because it doesn't work worldwide. If Rachel Smith was born in Panama, her ancestors might not have come from Africa. And what do you call a black person who is French or British? Certainly not African American.

During the pageant, I didn't even realize she was black. I was talking to a friend today about the pageant (I brought up how ugly the dresses were!) and we talked about the winner, and I said she was really cute, and my friend said, "Oh, yeah - the black girl won." I said, "No, Miss California was black but she didn't win" and my friend said Miss Tennessee was black and I hadn't even realized that during the pageant.

She is beautiful, but I don' t think she was the most beautful girl in the pageant.

If you read Rachel's interview at the Miss USA site, you'll see that she describes herself as being from a military family. Clearly, she was born in Panama not because she is ethnically Panamanian, but because her family was stationed there when she was born. Thus, the fact that she was born in Panama doesn't say anything about her ethnicity. She looks bi-racial, so the earlier post that was supposedly from Rachel's friend that said she has one Black parent and one White parent is believable. Also, in her interview, she raved about a recent trip to South Africa. If she did not have some Black ancestry, I don't think she would have made such a big deal about the trip.

She does have really black skin in a way she doesn't seem to be 100% black. but according to wikipedia she is "the fourth african american" to win Miss USA. I wish she is black, cuz i've been dying to see another african american to win Miss USA. Tamiko Nash last year was so close!

She may be born in Panama but she's not hispanic, she is a military brat. But I think she is black.

Sorry to disapoint, you but she is African American and White American, bi racial if you prefer. Smith is the fourth African American to be crowned miss USA. African Americans come in all shades by the way. Just because they don't look like you think they should.

How many spanish women have you heard about that are sur name is Smith and that's from Tennessee? No disrespect.

There are lots of black people who don't look black. Also, it's very rare to find a black person who isn't mixed with at least one other race. Even if it goes way back into their ancestry... It's very possible that Features of their ancestors shows in them even 100 years later so...if they say she's black, then she's black ya know?

She is very pretty and I say Congrats to her, whatever race she is!!
