The Windoze master boot record is corrupt (malware).

Use your Recovery CD's and kiss your data goodbye.

No Recovery CD's? Call Compaq.

The OS is corrupt - before doing anything else - restore default settings and reboot in BIOS. If you get F11 recovery option at boot use that or if you have the OS disk you can try to repair Windows (In Recovery console at command prompt use command - chkdsk /p). In case you do the latter check to make sure SATA native mode is disabled in BIOS under device configuration (if it is present) other wise your OS disk won't detect the HDD.

well it could be many things
1st you left a floppy in the floppy drive ( if any)
2nd corrupt or missing IO.sys or Msdos.sys or command.com, which are some necessary boot files which you will need to replace using your windows installation disk
3rd himem.sys not loading b/c missing or corrupt. Boot from startup disk and add this line to config.sys line
"device=c:\himem.sys" which will copy himem.sys to root of c
