The root of the term are "com" a prefix as com,con meaning along with, in concert with someone or something else
and "passion" from a Medieval french verb meaning to feel or accompany.
The term's meaning depends on your philosophical frame of reference, of course--which space-time you are to operate within. Religionists reject Earth, so nothing they say is moral--meaningful on Earth; Objectivists live on Earth so for them what works is moral, including ethical considerations applied to any other person within their minds.
Compassion for the realist philosopher, and I am one, means the ability to understand the categorical prioritized values a person is holding so as to understand what they're feeling, and whether or not it is useful to them and appropriate, a separate question.
It is more than empathy--the ability to recognize and sympathize with someones emotions; it means to judge them against a normative of (how man ought to operate) in order to not only recognize outward signs of suffering or happiness but to be able to decide whether these are appropriate and what to do about them, if anything.
Example:
If Louise is unhappy because her boyfriend asked someone else to a dance, empathy prompts you to say, "I know you must feel hurt by this, boy I would. "
Compassion would require you to ask, "Can I say anything else that would be helpful? Should I ask questions, comment on the boy if I know him, offer advice, tell her that she needs to find someone who really cares about her, etc.
Empathy is based on concrete responses and outward signs.
Compassion requires wisdom, context and adult understanding.

To me, compassion is when your heart is so full of love and you have an appreciation for life that you take the time that is needed to understand someone and thus love them. By understanding them, you have a better understanding of the world as a whole and thus have your heart fill that much more with love because you will understand that we are all connected even if it's not easily visable. Compassion towards ourselves is just as important and necessary before we can start expressing compassion towards others. That compassion for ourselves is what starts the love growing in our hearts and souls. Compassion is the answer in many situations even though it might not be the easiest or quickest way for us to get what we want. Eventually we learn that the value of compassion is as great a gift to ourselves as it is to others. Compassion works like glasses to help us see past mere first impressions or prejudices.

Yes i'll do my best:
Compassion is the desire to see someone in need, or someone that they can relate to, by experience, or just
hurt.
The difference between compassion and pity is great...
because when u pity someone all u do is be sorry for them , with words u express "luv". but thats all. While u see someone with compassion, u see there hurt and neccesity and with
the luv in ur soul and desire to help, u "get up" and do wat u
best can do to help that person.
theres a reason passion is in the word com'passion'
because passion is wat motivates someone to
have compassion for others, and (comp)passion is "Love in action".
