It is all about interest. You are interested in the songs you like. However, you have little or no interest in you vocab words.

The brain works best when 3 things are associated with whatever you wish to learn -- context, rhythm, and repetition. Songs provide context and rhythm. Generally, you hear the same song again and again, especially if you like them. But songs are not the only things that provide context, rhythm, and repetition.

For instance, many people have a hard time having sex in a hotel room, because it is not the usual context, which is their own home. Also, if you don't know the other person well enough, the two of you will not be able to match your rhythms. That also makes it less enjoyable.

Because in the songs, words make some kind of sense to you, telling a story or whatever, where as a random list of unrelated words is harder to memorize. Also, you probably listen to your favorite song a gazillion times because you like it. But remember, the songwriter wouldn't have much to say with out a vocabulary.

because the words in the song have a context. They have a place in your head that isn't just the word. Try studying your vocab words by putting them into a sentence, not just looking at the word and its meaning.

Maybe you should set them to music ;o) My students have to learn their states and capitals. There is a "states rap" in which all of the states and their capitals are set to music, sung in order. All my students usually get a 100% on the first try after we've practiced singing the song for a while. I also will burn it on a CD for them to take home. It works! Think about one of the very first songs you probably learned....it was educational...do you remember? Probably the ABC song!

They also have a "Mutiplication Rap" and tons of others. But for your vocab, you're probably going to have to compose it youself.

Because there is no music to them.
Try and arrange those words in an order that forms a rhythm and sing them.
You will remember them and have a good time doing it.
