Bullying is horrible. I've been bullied for a long time since childhood, and have bullied in the past. I'm ashamed of bullying those people now that I've matured though. =( Bullying has really affected me though. I now have depression and low self-esteem, and I'm paranoid that I'll be rejected by my own friends. When I am rejected by my own friends, it hits hard and renders me completely unable to function in a school setting. My grades have fallen drastically due to this.
I think it can't be stopped in later years, no matter how hard we try. I've seen that during "Diversity Days" in my school, talking about people's differences makes it worse. People started laughing about slurs and situations that were given as examples for what NOT to do.
Instead, schools should crack down on bullying at an early age. Children are a lot more responsive to adult input when younger, and timeout or detention seems a lot more extreme to a first grader than a high school student.
Bullying will never be stamped out completely, though. Jealousy, peer pressure, and the need to take your anger out on somebody else are always prevalent motivators towards bullying, and there is no way those motivators can be prevented fully. =/

It needs to be controlled by the teachers. A kid who is being bullied is afraid to ask for help.

1 - He may not be believed.

2 - He fears that the teacher may take the bully's side.

3 - He fears that the bullying will become worse if he tells.

Teachers always claim ignorance when bullying is brought to their attention, but it happens right in front of them. All they have to do is open their eyes.

It is one of the most disgusting things someone can do. And I go through it everyday. We have kids in depression and wanting to kill themselves because of kids at school. In my opinion treating a kid like dirt is worse then murder when it gets to the point that want to kill themselves. Think about the amount of torture that child must go through to want to kill themselves. And i know exactly how it feels. And not only can treating them like dirt can lead them into depression it can make it so they skip school, don't do as well, starting getting in fights. You take away there education and it's just so sick that kids think it's funny. It's not jealousy or low self a steam any more. They just think it's funny and it's cruel. Who do we have do blame for it? Sometimes it's the kids themselves or the parents don't teach there kids right from wrong or just don't care. Those are the kids that need counseling and in my opinion it should be noted as a mental illness. Though the kids who are tortured have at least on thing to keep in mind. There not the ones who's job will require there name on there shirt or flip burgers if they hang in there. Sometimes we just need to shrug it off other times we need to defend are selves then tell someone. i don't think detention does it anymore for treating others like dirt. Suspension , expulsion should be more like it and a good smack from their parents.

In NYS schools a student can be charged with a crime, "bullying" now. Expulsion, suspension, arrest, the whole gamut.
