With so much scrutiny ANYTHING a candidate does will cause someone not to vote for him/her. I'd say that his personal beliefs will carry more weight than his parent's, though.

No, what will matter is that Obama is now a Christian and has been for some time. Because his mother is an atheist doesn't mean she couldn't impart good qualities to her son. I know religion is important to some voters, but assuming that someone who is atheist is a bad person is just ridiculous. I've known atheists who are more upstanding morally than many Christians I've known. The bottom line is that if religion matters so much to a voter, it is to Obama's benefit that he "rose" above atheism to become a Christian. It should work in the opposite direction from which you claim.

EDIT: Ah, I noticed many people claiming she is an agnostic so I did some research and damn if they aren't right. Big difference between agnosticism and atheism. A world of difference.

Obama admitted his father was an atheist. But he said his mother did believe in God not in an organized religion. She introduced him to Christianity, Islam, and Hinduism so he can have a better grasp of these religions. I think only stupid people will care if his parents were atheists or secular.

His mother is not an atheist, she just doesn't adhere to one belief. Agnostic is a better term.
Unfortunatly I think it will affect how a lot of people vote. But it can also work both ways. I personally admire the fact that he does not pander to the crazy religious right. Ted Haggard was an advisor to Bush. Is that the kind of person you want helping the president? We need to keep religion and state separate, just like in the constitution.

Oh get over Peter Parker!

If we were to blame out parents for how they decided to raise us or which church to send us to then the entire Catholic Religion should be abolished and every politic figure who's Catholic should be relieved from their duties and sent backing.

And throw Mrs. Bill Clinton in the mix. Did her momma teach her how to change her accent when she's chatting with black folks? And for goodness sake don't leave out the 'homos' which I sure you would call them because it seems your a bit racist.... don't leave them out because if any Gay person took office or even supported the candidate you like they should be banned from the white house as well as the candidate you support.

So... who does that leaves us with... The Native Americans. Well, it' their country anyway so... . you wouldn't have a problem with a Native America becoming President... would you ?

People these days don't judge you so harshly based upon your family. It still carries some weight, but not like it used to.

Most people don't care whether or not you believe in God as long as you prove yourself to be an honorable person.

Yes, that and his view on terrorism. Most people do not judge you on your parents actions but we are not talking about his parents diet, or color schemes, or what form of discipline they chose, or even what kind of drugs they used. He seems like a nice guy but I do not see his place in politics in USA. Maybe some type of promotional speaking, or even Hollywood.
