If it's the throwout bearing, the noise should go away or lessen when you depress the clutch. If it's the throwout bearing that's a pretty major operation to do outside of a shop with a lift.

Throwout bearings don't sound like lifters, they sound like bearings going bad. Throwout bearings make lots of noise most of them will sound off in neutral as well as when you are driving. I would take the driveshaft off and check the U joints first, a good check for these is a clinking sound when you sit and switch from fwd to rev, without really moving the car.Good luck.

.Chellie by the way You talk(write) I take for granted You know mechanics.

may be, inside the tranny,i am thinking about one of the front gear "forks" .may be loose the retainer ball and traveling slide.

when driving forward ,let Your hand rest on the stickshifter and try to feel the knock through the the shifter,if is not ,then is not what I think.

the other test is,let your foot ride the clutch pedal and feel the knocking in it.

and the final.....one of the spring in the clutch plate is broken.
not, the pressure plate spring, the one in the clutch plate it self

yea a throw-out bearing can make a noise like that.in the first place,a throw-out bearing isnt suppose to run all the time, just when you push the clutch in.whats probably happen is someone adjusted the clutch so the throw-out bearing is running all the time on the pressure plate, and ruin the bearing.

I was going to suggest tappets, but I see you use the term 'lifters' which is unfamiliar to me, but which I guess is the American term for 'tappets'.
