Best or most fun? Lots of gasoline makes pretty flames. I think that gas bbq's are pointless, I have a gas stove so I could do that inside, plus I'm not so hungry and lazy that I can't wait a little bit for the charcoal to be ready.
Best way is with a charcoal lighting thingy.... metal can with a handle and grates... you put 3 sheets of newspaper in the bottom and light through the wholes. Home depot has em for less than twenty bux... I went all out for the coleman one, it seems more solid (though I leave it out yr round, I never did take good care of my toys).

With an electric charcoal lighter. After getting some of the coals lit, take out the electric lighter and use a hairdryer to blow over the coals. This is for lighting a bbq, not a grill. BBQ is for slow cooking with smoke and a grill is for high heat searing of food.

At most hardware stores and home improvement stores sell these electric charcoal starters. That is perhaps the safest way to start charcoal. Secondly use Quick start Charcoal brickets and wood chips. I used to build huge rolling trailer drawn Hog Roasters and Fast BBQ'ers for a living. I love grilling.

I only use lump charcoal, no gas. but I use a chimney and have a torch to blast a flame up through the coals. I use a garden torch, not a cutting torch.
Jeez people you all use lighter fluid, that stuff is nasty, you can taste it on the food. eeeyuck.

depends on the mood you're going for, but I would try: main light-45 up and out with a shoot through umbrella (softens the light), accent light-backlit, 2:1 ratio.

You get special firelighting bricks. Just put those in amongst the coal.
Or use propane - taste the meat not the heat!

charcoal...make a tower of briquettes, soak it with fluid, wait a few minutes, soak it again and light immediately, leave it to burn down until most briquettes are gray around the edges, then spread it.
