On my set - a Panasonic, the remote has a button with which you can switch from "Ambience On" to "Am. Off" - and the use of this button enables you to alter the "apparent" effect of the music/speech ratios. What we really need is a way of toning down the noise from the adverts, especially that bloody Barry whats-his-name with Cillit Bang ! ! !

(Note that the septic tanks' spell checker gets "ambience" wrong - they want you to spell it "ambiance"!)

I have this same problem. I am rather hard of hearing so use an aid, but this cannot distinguish between music and speech. It's not too bad in plays or soaps, the most infuriating is in documentaries or factual programmes where the words are more important than any actions but you can't hear the dialogue because of the background. As soon as you come a crucial point in the programme so the music rises in a dramatic crescendo leaving you none the wiser.

Yeah have you notice the sound difference between channels if you flick between BBC1 (for example) and C4 during Deal or No Deal you get deafened on 1 and can't hear a word literally on 4. The sound on TV adverts, music, between channels everything is messed up why don't they have fixed levels they all stick to.

...sometimes the Background Music is better than the Dialogue!
In fact, when I shop in a Supermarket, and there's background muzak on, I sometimes ask the Cashier where can I get the Album?
It's quite hilarious how many cashiers take me seriously....!!
