why aren't US providers offering synchronous dsl/broadband connectivity? Why is it all asynchronous?

Because they assume that you download more than you upload (that's the standard user behavior). You can get synchronous connections (on DSL at least; not on cable), but they're a lot more expensive.

BTW: It isn't asynchronous, it's asymmetric - at least where "ADSL" is involved.

"asynchronous" means that data is transfered in both directions at the same time. "synchronous" means that data is transfered in one direction at a time.

Asynchronous is faster!

I think you would have to be T1 (dedicated server telephone line) and in 1995 that was $3-5K a month.
