The installation process (when you insert a Windows operating system CD or DVD) will offer you an easy & automation option for "formatting" (wiping out as you put it) everything on the drive or partition.

I replaced Windows 95 with Windows 98 on a PC recently. I started by going into DOS mode under Windows 95, and typing:

FORMAT C:

which erases everything on the hard drive. Then I put the Windows 98 installation disk in the CD drive, and off it went installing the new system. No problems at all. Within an hour it was all fully working again under the new operating system.

1. Back up your data that you dont want to loose.
2. Write down the names and numbers of your video card, sound card, and ethernet adapter. (You could be sorry if you skip the above steps).
3. Decide on the appropriate Operating system. Your choices: a) throw your money away on Windows operating systems or b)get a good open source operating system like Kubuntu for free at www.kubuntu.org.
4. If you use Kubuntu, put the CD in the drive and you will need only to follow the directions on the screen and you will be online in about ten minutes.

Put your Operating System disk in your drive, boot to the CD and run through a new install of the OS. You can delete the partition, create a new one, format the new partition and install the OS clean. Make sure that you have any CD with drivers for your motherboard, sound card, video. Usually XP will load drivers to get your system functioning so that you can download/install any required files that aren't part of the OS.
